What is ISO?
ISO is the International Standardization Organization.
It is a non-governmental organization created in 1947 to facilitate the international coordination and unification of industrial standards.
It acts as a link between the public and the private sector or works independently with one or the other, to find solutions that satisfy business requirements and the consumer demands.
Why “to standardize”?
Enable products to work interchangeably or together;
Provide assurance that a product can deliver a certain level of performance; and
provide the tools (for example, symbols and terminology) that make it easier for designers, manufacturers and users to communicate.
What is ISO 9000?
ISO 9000 is the internationally recognized standard for an organization's internal Quality Management. The term 'quality' refers to all those features of a product or service which are required by the customer.
Definition of “Quality”:
Quality of product/service is defined as:
Fit to use.
Conforming to requirements. (Standards)
Safe to use à health, environment (EMS)
Responding to customer needs and requirements.
What is “Quality Management”?
An organization's “Quality Management” refers to its actions to ensure that its products or services satisfy its customers' quality requirements and complies with any regulations applicable to those products or services.
Eight core Quality Management Principles:
1. customer focus
2. leadership
3. the involvement of people
4. a process approach
5. a system approach to management (documentation)
6. continual improvement
7. a factual approach to decision making
8. mutually beneficial supplier relationship
ISO 9000:
ISO 9000: represents the essential requirements that every enterprise needs to address to ensure the consistent production and timely delivery of its goods and services to the marketplace.
Evolution of ISO 9000 series:
ISO 9000:1987
Concentrated mainly on conformance with procedure rather than an overall process of management.
ISO 9000:1994
Which emphasize quality assurance through strict control à Documentation of requirements was introduced.
Evolution of ISO 9000 series:(cntd’)
ISO 9001:2000
Placing the concept of process management at the heart of the standard
('a documented system' not a 'system of documents‘)
The goal is to have management system effectiveness via process performance measures, a continual improvement process and tracking customer satisfaction.
The ISO 9000:2000 family
ISO 9001:2000
covers the entire process from product design through after sales service.
ISO 9002:2000
covers only the manufacture of the product.
ISO 9003:2000
covers the "final inspection" of the product only.
ISO 9004:2000
is an "Internal Use" standard guideline.
What is integrated in the quality system ISO 9001:2000?
